Jim Green, a UK-based writer, created JazzEra from scratch, with the help of agentic AI. He had no background in technology — but as someone whose work had been scraped to train AI models, he was curious what all the fuss was about.
He had written many books over many years: textbooks, travel, humour — even a Welsh quiz book. And several novels: a crime series built around Jimmy Costello, a corrupt and violent detective sergeant in London's Metropolitan Police; and an historical espionage series, chronicling the rise of the American intelligence agencies. But, due to circumstances, he had to give up writing for about ten years.
When he returned to his trade, it was as a playwright. His adaptation of a new translation of Aeschylus's tragedy, Prometheus Bound, was performed in Surrey, England, in 2024. Then he began work on a musical — 'Fifty-Eight — set in 1958, when Jim was fourteen. What a time to be setting out as a teenager! He finished the script, and spent two years looking for a musical collaborator. Without success.
Then he read an article in the New Statesman, about music-creation platforms. He went there — and the music began to flow. Once he had the instrumentals and the songs for his musical, he decided to explore what else AI could do for him as a creative. The latest go-to thing was platforms that write code from plain English. So he asked: “Can you write code for me?” And the answer came back: “Yes, I can. What is it you want to build?”
Jim had enjoyed jazz as a young man, but it had rather fallen out of his life — until it returned in his musical. So that's what he decided to build: a place where people could listen to jazz, and respond.
And JazzEra began to be built.
Welcome to JazzEra Junction, the place where our users can find and share information about what JazzEra is, does and aspires to be.
First and most important, JazzEra has only one agenda: to help people discover and enjoy jazz.
For the present all our tracks are AI generated in-house. We hope that as we develop, we will be able to accept music created by live musicians and our users. When that happens depends on how fast we grow.
Because all our music is AI generated, all our tracks are part of the Creative Commons — that means anybody can use them in any way they want: perform them, copy and share them, deploy them commercially, whatever. Soon, we will ask (a request, not a condition) that any use acknowledges the original source, but that's down the line — because, at the moment, we're more interested in getting the music out there than terms and conditions. They will have to come, but for now, let the music play.
Jazz is both universal and local — jazz in the UK is the same as, but different from, jazz in the Middle East. Anyone who listens to jazz knows what we mean. Very soon, if JazzEra finds a user base in the UK or other English-speaking countries, we'd like to find partners and developers who can bring it to other countries. If you contribute by downloading a video, then the whole result belongs to you — the track is Creative Commons, the video is yours (or has the restrictions which applied when you created it). What you do with it is your business. If you are a bit creative and can sing, then by all means take any track we publish and turn it into a song — again, the result will be yours. If you are a performer and want to play any of our tracks, fine, go ahead — no acknowledgements and certainly no payments needed.
